Chicken Licken Pixies of Asia, the oldest member of whom is a mere nipper at thirteen, met whilst attending classes at the Worcester School of Rock and Performance (WSRP), and developed their material during specialist song-writing classes that were held last term at the centre, at which pupils meet on a Saturday morning. Having been entered by WSRP into the national competition run by Young Chamber UK, the place that they have gained in the final means that the youngsters now have the opportunity to perform at the BAFTA theatre in Piccadilly.
Of course, for us here at sky lanterns, one of the most delightful parts of this story is that a group of talented musicians would care to dedicate a song to our delightful products, and for this we are touched. Truly.

We’re not chatting about the brilliant Thunderbirds character; we’re interested in the squishy ball of matter residing in our skulls. As we all know, it helps us do everything we so desire, so this week, we thought we’d have a little delve into what really happens in your brain when you decide to get on the phone, order some sky lanterns, and then release them as part of your special celebration, or for no particular reason at all. So sit back, lovely readers, and relish this little exploration about the different sections of your noggin that are exercised with sky lanterns:
The Medulla Oblongata: This bad boy helps control autonomic functions, such as breathing and digestion. So, when you’re gasping at the beauty of a release of sky lanterns, the trusty Medulla Oblongata will keep your breathing going automatically…useful, we’re sure you’ll agree.
The Cerebellum: In charge of co-ordinating movement, posture and balance. An example of signal sent by this fellow may be, “Open packaging of sky lanterns. With both hands. Unfold lanterns- again, with both hands. Light fuel cell. Keep fingers away from flame”.
The Occipital Lobe: This may be the most important part of the brain for you to get the best sky lanterns experience, because it controls visual sensation and processing. Particularly great, as sky lanterns don’t sing to you as they float away (yet…).

The Raniag Twilight Festival, held in Vigan City in Manila, was an opportunity for those who wished to participate to dress up in Halloween costumes, and watch a spectacular parade of dancers and performers, also adorned in similar attire, in honour of thanking the Lord for their own lives, as well as remembering those who they have lost. Once night fell, a release of over 200 sky lanterns was organised, each held by public officials and other sector representatives, in order to signify unity within the local government, and to encourage other people to come together. Not only this, but the sky lanterns were used as symbols of prayers for the departed, and signs of thanksgiving.

It’s even more of a joy when someone creative and imaginative, such as the lovely Brent Heise, who sent us an email recently, explaining how he had been inspired by seeing a release of sky lanterns in Warsaw. As he rightly pointed out, the journey of the lanterns can really only be seen for a short while after take-off, and that got him wondering about the adventures and unique journey the lantern may encounter once it was out of his sight. In fact, he got so interested in this pondering, that he created a beautiful motion graphics video, based on this wholly imaged adventure. He kindly sent us a link to it, and here we are now, sharing it with you, on your lunch hour/coffee break/faffing time.

Because we never want to feel left out, we’ll be running a stall at the Beatrix Potter Primary School on the 11th December, as part of their Christmas fair. Not only will we have a range of our sky lanterns for sale, there will also be other toys and treats for the whole family. It’s definitely worth a visit, as you’ll be able to browse other book sales, sample homemade cakes and biscuits, as well as chow down on a lovely hog roast, as donated by our friends at Big Roast (just the thing for filling your tum after a hard morning of shopping).

The town of Eton, however, has excelled itself this year, as the events of the evening following the switching on of the lights promised to please punters of all ages. After the main lights were turned on (the lucky person who got to push the button was decided in a prize draw earlier on during the day), Eton College and Eton Porny School choirs sang  to the crowds, who also had the chance to meet Father Christmas as he paraded through the town centre. Not only this, but a special lantern parade took place, in which everyone was invited to take part, to raise money for Help for Heroes; a very worthy cause, we’re sure you’ll agree.

However, on one of the occasions that we ventured out last week, we took our little selves to Supper Club London, a unique dining experience in the South West of our capital city. We were treated to a home cooked meal in the comfort of a stranger’s home, and delighted by the relaxed, warm atmosphere. Not only did we feast on soup, lamb and then a bramble crumble, the after-dinner entertainment (along with the chocolates and coffee) was a display of our very own sky lanterns, released in the back garden of John, our chef for the evening. Being something of harsh food critics, we don’t lightly recommend many eateries in London, however, this one is certainly not to be missed. It is advised to pop along to their website and get yourself a seat reserved, pronto.

On the 21st November, new Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton will join the Mayor of Carlisle, Mary Styth, in switching on the city’s Christmas lights, which will mark the countdown to the main day (and hopefully get everyone in the mood to start their Christmas shopping in the city centre). The lights are just the beginning of other festive events organised by the local council; the same day will see a massive Glee-themed sing-a-long, as well as DJs and live bands performing. In December, a special lantern parade will take place, as local community groups join together to march behind three wise men (on camels, no less), from the castle to the city centre. Sounds like the perfect opportunity to get some sky lanterns released.
